A Visual Inventory of Wikipedia
What does a map of Wikipedia look like? Since we couldn’t fit 5½ million articles on a poster, we used topic modeling algorithms to organize everything into categories and subcategories. For each subcategory, we hand-selected a representative article to illustrate and included a short synopsis. The resulting collection shows the relative proportion of the topics and is a mixture of the peculiar and the mundane — reflecting the experience of going to Wikipedia for one piece of information and being drawn down other paths to follow useful connections or entertaining distractions.
